Seeing the potential in everything: Made Thought design director Radek Wojcik

From the development of a concept to its practical, visual realisation, design director at Made Thought, Radek Wojcik, is responsible for guiding projects through to their delivery. Between initial Thought and Made product, Radek works with clients, artworkers and other directors to shape the project trajectory and ultimately turn a creative vision into a concrete reality. He chats to us about the essential skills required of his role at Made Thought: communication, agility and dedication.

What does your role at Made Thought involve?
My role requires a high level of agility – overseeing a team of designers over a variety of projects and clients. I work closely with the creative directors, designers and project managers to help define the creative opportunity and shape the project direction while ensuring we answer each brief with energy and intelligence.

The role generally requires me to be involved in all phases of a project, from client immersions, concept development and presentations to the client, through to artwork and delivery. In a way, I act as the conduit between creative ambition and guidance and the practicalities of making it a reality. There are always unexpected parts to the role and that’s what keeps you on your toes!

What is most enjoyable about your work?
The variety and calibre of clients and the excitement of a creative challenge are definitely the highlights. We don’t conform to a house style – rather, we see the creative opportunity in everything! I believe this allows us to consistently challenge and reinvent our creative trajectory, which in turn leads to thoughtful and beautiful work. Fundamentally, I like the way the team at Made Thought think – seeing potential in everything; there’s a real beauty in that.

What skills are most essential to your role?
Communication – the ability to quickly, clearly and articulately formulate and convey ideas. This is applicable on multiple levels – from reviewing and critiquing designers work, giving the team creative direction, through to writing presentations and ultimately pitching and presenting to clients. There needs to be a very clear understanding of the idea that you're are trying to impart and this requires clarity and conviction.

What are the tools that you find yourself using most in your work?
Well, it’s hard not to say the computer and the infinite resource that is the internet, so I’d say the computer and the infinite resource that is the internet! Of course, these are just tools!

How did you come to this job?
I actually went through a recruiter. Made Thought is a studio I’ve always admired, ever since studying in Australia, so I made the move and was fortunate enough to land a position as a designer – and I’m still here!

Do you have any advice or recommendations for a young creative looking to pursue a similar career?
Be passionate about what you do and really throw yourself into it. It’s not just a matter of talent, but dedication to your craft – this will help you understand who you are and how you think as a designer. Be open to new ideas and points of view, if only to reinforce your own. Give it time!
