The Marketing Officer is responsible for significant elements of Theatre Royal Plymouth’s marketing department.

The Role

Principal Responsibilities

  • The creation and implementation of successful marketing campaigns rooted in the principles of developing customer loyalty and lifetime value, working precisely to deliver activity on time, to budget and to achieve set targets.
  • To use reporting and statistical information to constantly track customer behaviour and the success of marketing campaigns to inform next steps including data from Tessitura, Purple Seven, Prospect 2, Google Analytics and social media metrics.
  • To be jointly responsible for the delivery, evaluation and evolution of the digital communications for Theatre Royal Plymouth including website content, social media and email marketing. Whilst looking for opportunities to implement and support new methods of digital marketing as they arise, helping to ensure Theatre Royal Plymouth is at the forefront of digital marketing to maximise audience engagement.
  • To work in partnership with teams and colleagues across the organisation to advise, support and deliver activity in pursuit of organisational objectives.
  • To work with all colleagues to contribute towards the successful progression of Marketing Department and its aims.

Principal Tasks

  • To work cohesively with TRP’s chosen media buyers to plan and implement activity on their allocated marketing campaigns, on time and on budget.
  • To work closely with internal departments to maximise engagement for all Theatre Royal Plymouth’s work, and to utilise their contacts to help further audience development initiatives.
  • To support audience engagement and development research, helping to identify areas for development and creating initiatives to practically do so.
  • To contribute directly to the production of Theatre Royal Plymouth’s print marketing; What’s On Guides, in-house show programmes, direct mailings, free sheets etc. This includes liaising with internal departments and external contacts, proofing, and quality control.
  • To provide organisational marketing support to all departments in conjunction with other Marketing Officers. Identifying opportunities for growth and working with colleagues to maximise output across departments.
  • To be jointly responsible for all print and display materials within and immediately around the venue, including the FOH Digital Screens, so that it is a strategic and sales focused function, and to liaise with other departments that assist in this area. This includes the production and delivery of the external banners, including scheduling and budgeting.
  • To be jointly responsible for creating and managing content for our website, ensuring that information for shows, internal departments and core business areas are always relevant and up to date.
  • To be responsible for the administration, budget recording and proofing of all adverts and show specific overprinting.
  • To work closely with the Head of Insight and Revenue Management to ensure all audience development initiatives fully utilise the Theatre’s CRM system, Tessitura, and to practically act upon research findings when planning campaigns.
  • To work closely with the Marketing Manager and other Marketing Officers to ensure all audience development initiatives are successfully integrated with our website and social media platforms.
  • To provide regular updates, reports and evaluations for your campaigns using a combination of information from Tessitura, audience research and data mining.
  • To provide updates to Management regarding performance statistics related to show sales and audience development achievements.
  • To write copy and create images/assets with our in-house designer promoting shows and other projects associated with Theatre Royal Plymouth.
  • To send marketing emails using the Theatre’s email client Prospect 2, ensuring that design and function is consistent and that the schedule is up to date and agreed throughout the team.
  • To maintain and develop effective and successful relationships with show producers, Theatre Royal Plymouth colleagues and customers.
  • Create, maintain and develop relationships with our key suppliers to ensure high-quality representation of shows and events.
  • To work closely with Box Office management to maximise the potential for online ticket sales and ancillary products.
  • To work with internal departments to ensure their work is always promoted creatively and effectively.
  • To represent Theatre Royal Plymouth and contribute towards audience development initiatives and objectives.
  • To keep fully up to date with both current and emerging audience development initiatives and to proactively suggest areas for potential growth working with key funding partners.
  • Be a champion of the Theatre's brand, its values and its functional uses and ensure consistency across all marketing channels, including digital.
  • To help coordinate efficient responses to external enquiries as/when required.
  • To work alongside all members of the Marketing Department on wider projects where appropriate.
  • To keep accurate records of expenditure and to work within agreed budgets and deadlines using the Theatre’s finance management system, Focal Point.
  • To ensure print levels are maintained. This may involve lifting boxes of print weighing up to 20kg and climbing ladders.
  • Book mailings into the distribution house and set up orders with them.
  • To attend productions and events pertinent to your job role, often outside of standard office hours.
  • Participate with TRP social media community management strategy and included in the out of hours on call rota.
  • To manage, along with other members of the team, the marketing storage area making sure all storage, archiving and recycling is maintained and accessible at all times.
  • To undertake any additional marketing activities as required.

  • A qualification relevant to the post (Marketing Officer) and a minimum of 1 years’ experience in a similar role OR equivalent experience which demonstrates knowledge of creating engaging campaigns

  • Strong understanding of digital trends and the social media landscape
  • Experience of content management
  • A demonstrable understanding of developing and implementing media and content to support and deliver campaign objectives

  • A high standard of office IT competence and standard creative software and kit.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal teams, and external partners
  • Ability to generate a stream of creative ideas collaboratively with wider departments

  • The ability to interact confidently with a wide variety of individuals both in person or digitally (producers, company managers, cast & crew, senior managers, agency clients)
