Knights Of is an award-winning independent children’s publisher looking for a creative, committed, and talented design assistant to work across our list. We are recognised for nurturing incredible diverse talent and bringing debut talent to chart topping positions. Some of our award winning titles include High Rise Mystery, A Kind of Spark and Happy Here.

Design is central to our vision and we have continually challenged expectations on what inclusive and bestselling commercial publishing can look like. A core aspect to our approach is working with experienced and new illustrators and growing creative relationships. This role will enable you to learn how design operates within the publishing industry – both for books and
marketing purposes.

As this is an entry level position we do not require you to have had any previous publishing or professional design experience but you should be able to demonstrate a keen design eye, good creative flair and a desire to learn. You’ll be a confident user of Adobe Creative Programmes – ideally with some experience in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

In 2022 we were awarded Children’s Publisher of the Year at the British Book Industry Awards. With a growing team with big ambitions, it’s a great time to join Knights Of. A love of inclusive children’s books is essential.

What you can expect

  • With support and guidance from the senior designer, the Design Assistant will have opportunities to create their own original book covers and layouts, across black and white fiction
  • Begin to develop an awareness and understanding of marketplace trends and how to put that knowledge into practice when designing your own books
  • Learn how to research, find and commission illustrators for book projects and maintain positive working relationships with hired creatives
  • Learn how to support and art direct illustrators through concept stages to final art

  • To have experience using Adobe Creative Programmes, with some knowledge ideally in InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator
  • Ability to prioritise and multitask projects whilst keeping to deadlines
  • Ability to respond to and take on board constructive criticism in a professional manner
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills
  • Keen to work in a small, mission-led team focused on inclusive children’s books is essential

In addition to the above, the Design Assistant will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to build close-working relationships with colleagues.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Liaising with the senior designer to ensure that projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard
  • Liaising with the Editorial departments regarding production schedules, proofing, corrections and chasing copy if necessary
  • Aiding in the set up of press ready cover and internal files
  • Attending department meetings and ensuring all work in progress is backed up on a daily basis and that all digital files are complete
  • Assisting with various design tasks and creating assets for Production, Editorial, Marketing, and Sales teams when required
  • Creating assets for use across social media platforms
  • Designing some point of sale and marketing materials for Knights Of books
