Are you a Black photographer aged 18 – 24 living in Lambeth or Southwark?

Our free week-long photography course sets out to lift up young local talent, using the Hayward Gallery’s 'In the Black Fantastic' exhibition as its inspiration.

We’re inviting emerging photographers aged 18 – 24 who identify as Black, or dual heritage and part of the Black African or African Caribbean diaspora, and who are resident in Lambeth or Southwark, to apply to join this free creative photography course. If that’s you, we’ve got all the details on what the course involves, and how to apply.

Curated by Ekow Eshun, 'In the Black Fantastic' is an art exhibition bringing together 11 contemporary artists from the African diaspora who draw on mythology, science fiction, spiritual traditions and folklore in order to address racial injustice, reimagine historical events and create alternative realities. In doing this, they build what Eshun has described as 'new narratives of Black possibility'. For the course, Eshun is setting a provocation for participating photographers to generate their own creative response to, expanding on the themes of the exhibition.

We are looking for up to 20 talented local emerging photographers, who connect to the themes of the exhibition through their personal lived experience, to form this Photo-Fantastic collective. You must have some prior experience with photography (this is not a course for complete beginners), but whether you are still finding and honing your artistic vision, or are on the verge of developing your career professionally, we want to hear from you.

This intensive week-long course is guided by leading Black photographers, with guest appearances from Misan Harriman and Ekow Eshun. Participants need to be familiar with (but not limited to) shooting on iPhone and apps like Adobe Lightroom and Filmic Pro for video capture. Photographic equipment is supplied as needed for the duration of the course.

The course culminates in a public sharing of your artwork at Southbank Centre and beyond.
