Eight resources for Black creatives and founders, recommended by Mentor Black Business

Since 2020, Mentor Black Business has existed as a resource for Black-owned businesses to thrive. Having collaborated with the likes of Google and Somerset House, they’ve connected countless emerging founders with industry mentors, and delivered invaluable training and workshops. Here, we’ve teamed up with them to bring you their top-recommended mentoring schemes, masterclasses and resources, especially for Black creatives and business founders across the UK.

M&C Saatchi Saturday School

M&C Saatchi Saturday School was founded in 2019, supported by Out the Box UK and funded by the M&C Saatchi Group. The school serves communities around the world, sharing creative methods and online content to teach the basics of business. Though open to all, Saturday School seeks to ensure underrepresented groups have access to training, opportunities and creative entrepreneurship skills – specifically aimed at serving Black women, women of colour and young people aged 16 to 25.

Black Business Incubator

Black Business Incubator, developed in conjunction with Somerset House and sponsored by Morgan Stanley, welcomes UK-based applicants identifying as Black or mixed-race, who have launched their business within the last three years. They must operate within the creative sector, including fashion, film, media, design, photography, gaming, marketing and advertising. For their next cohort, they are looking for 35 Black-led creative businesses based in South London – but hurry, the next round of applications close on 12th November!

Mentor Black Business Masterclasses

Mentor Black Business have uploaded over 75 Industry Access Masterclass videos to their YouTube and Instagram accounts, made in partnership with leading brands including Virgin, Google and Budweiser. This allows you to shape your learning according to the business skills you need right now, whilst being guided by industry experts across the fields of music, finance, tech, design and more. Their content ranges from How to Get Your Product Into Supermarkets, to How to Run a Creative Business and How to Get Funded.

Lloyds Bank Academy

The Lloyds Bank Academy is an online learning hub that's here to help you get more out of life and work. Their wide programme of lessons is open to everyone, easy to follow and completely free. Whether you want to improve your career or give your business or charity a boost, the Academy has lessons and skills training for you.

Virgin Start-Up Loans

Virgin offers personal loans for founders looking to start or grow their businesses. Borrow from £500 to £25,000 per co-founder, over one to five years at a fixed interest rate of 6% p.a. Every funded founder receives twelve months of exclusive support as part of The Funded Club. This includes expert guidance to help you start and scale your business, a dedicated business advice helpline and regular opportunities to meet with specialist mentors.

Google Digital Garage Mentoring

Google Digital Garage offer free one-to-one mentoring with digital experts to help your UK-based business or charity. You will will be paired with a Google Digital Garage mentor who will provide expert guidance in areas such as digital marketing, social media strategy, Google Analytics, selling online, optimising your website and increasing visibility. Mentoring sessions are available for UK-based small businesses and charities only.

Pinterest Black Gold Accelerator

If you're a Black-owned business or creator ready to take your offering to a wider audience and pitch for investment, Pinterest have got your back. They are offering three months of dedicated support, including access to dedicated mentors, an allowance of Pinterest ad credits and industry specific masterclasses from brand leaders. Applications close 30th November 2021.

Digital Boost

Digital Boost are a community of digital professionals who want to help small businesses and charities upskill and grow. Their free resource library includes articles and webinars on digital marketing, design and branding, business strategy, e-commerce, data analytics and more.
